Tantrisms

Tantra is a complex and ancient spiritual tradition originating in India that incorporates ritual, meditative, and sometimes sexual practices to foster spiritual awakening and union with the divine. It developed within Hinduism and Buddhism, influencing various religious schools and practices.

to my friend Alex Sinapah

Origins and Historical Development

The term "tantra" comes from Sanskrit and means "fabric" or "weave," symbolizing the idea of a structure or system. Tantra emerged around the 5th century CE, although some of its practices may date back to earlier traditions. It developed in different branches of Hinduism, including Shivaism and Shaktism, as well as in Mahāyāna and Vajrayāna Buddhism.

Fundamental Principles

Tantrism is based on several key concepts:
Union of Masculine and Feminine: Symbolized by the deities Shiva (consciousness) and Shakti (energy), this union represents the harmony of opposites and the integration of dualities.
Transcendence of Desire: Rather than rejecting desires, Tantra seeks to transform them into spiritual energy to achieve enlightenment.
Importance of the Body: The body is considered a sacred instrument enabling spiritual realization.

Tantric Practices

Tantric practices are varied and may include:
Mantras: Sacred formulas recited to focus the mind and invoke specific energies.
Here is a selection of tantric mantras from the Hindu and Buddhist Tantric traditions, used for spiritual awakening, chakra activation, or the achievement of divine union:

Tantra and Kundalini Awakening: A Real but Powerful Phenomenon

In the traditions of tantra, the gradual awakening of kundalini is associated with a profound transformation of the body, mind, and consciousness.
Kundalini is a spiritual energy present in each of us, often symbolized as a serpent coiled at the base of the spine.
When kundalini energy is activated, it rises along the chakras, causing a variety of experiences:

  • Rise of energy or heat in the spine
  • Intense emotions (ecstasy, fear, sadness, etc.)
  • Extrasensory perceptions
  • Physical phenomena (tremors, spasms, visions)

Although it can be deeply liberating, an uncontrolled activation can create confusion, anxiety, and even physical and mental crises.

Kundalini and Spiritual Crisis: What Does Psychology Say?

Many psychiatrists and transpersonal psychologists agree that the awakening of the kundalini is not a pathology, but can be experienced as an intense spiritual crisis.

7 Tips for Activating the Kundalini Safely

Here are some practices recognized for promoting a progressive, balanced, and reassuring awakening:

Practice a suitable yoga style

Choose gentle forms like Hatha Yoga, Yoga Nidra, or supervised Kundalini Yoga.

Meditate regularly

Mindfulness meditation, or breath-centered practices, calm the mind and open energy pathways without forcing it.

Respect your own rhythm

Don’t try to "Awaken the kundalini" quickly. Instead, let the energy rise on its own, at the right time.

Get serious information

Reading reliable books, or consulting qualified guides, avoids preconceived ideas and risks.

Work on grounding

Walking in nature, deep breathing, eating a lively diet, and connecting with your body are essential to balance awakening.

Being supported

An experienced therapist or teacher in the field of spiritual awakening can make all the difference, especially if strong symptoms appear.

Avoid extreme practices

Beware of hyperventilation, hallucinogenic substances, or unsupervised energy practices.

Activating Kundalini safely: science, awareness, and caution

The awakening of kundalini, often described as a surge of energy along the spine, is as fascinating as it is worried. A powerful phenomenon of inner transformation, it is sometimes misunderstood, poorly managed, or even triggered prematurely. However, when experienced under the right conditions, this awakening can become a catalyst for spiritual awakening, healing, and self-realization.

A real phenomenon... but not trivial

According to the traditions of yoga and tantra, kundalini is a latent energy located at the base of the spine (root chakra). When it awakens, it passes through the chakras, potentially activating altered states of consciousness, intense creativity, or even subtle perceptions.
But this surge can also be accompanied by:

  • sleep disturbances,
  • unusual physical sensations (heat, shaking),
  • extreme emotional states,
  • mental confusion or a feeling of "losing touch with reality."

Without preparation or support, these signs can be experienced as distressing, or even confused with a psychiatric illness.

Kundalini: Spiritual Crisis or Mental Disorder?

Psychiatrist Lee Sannella, in "Kundalini: Psychosis or Transcendence?", documented numerous cases where Kundalini awakening resembled a psychotic episode... while not being one. For her part, Bonnie Greenwell, a doctor of transpersonal psychology, emphasizes the importance of differentiating between spiritual awakening and psychological imbalance.
The concept of "spiritual crisis" (or "spiritual emergency"), championed by Stanislav and Christina Grof, allows us to understand these experiences as evolutionary transitions, and not as illnesses.

Keys to a gentle and safe activation

Here are the recommendations most frequently endorsed by spiritual experts and therapists Specialized:

Do not try to force awakening

Extreme techniques (intense breathing, prolonged fasting, psychotropic substances) can cause sudden awakening, which is difficult to integrate. It’s safer to prioritize patience and listening to yourself.

Preparing the Ground

A regular yoga practice (especially Hatha or gentle Kundalini Yoga), mindfulness meditation, and a balanced lifestyle help to make the body and mind more stable.

Being Supported

An experienced teacher, or a therapist with training in transpersonal psychology, can provide essential support. This is especially true in the case of unusual manifestations.

Grounding, Breathing, Integration

If the energy rises, it is essential to stay connected to the body, to promote grounding (walking, eating, deep breathing), and to give the process time.

In conclusion: awakening, yes — but consciously

The awakening of the kundalini is neither a legend nor a mental anomaly. It is a profound energetic and psychospiritual phenomenon, which requires respect, patience, and discernment. Far from wanting to "provoke" an awakening, it is rather a matter of creating the conditions for a healthy and harmonious welcome of this transformative force.

The activation of the kundalini requires caution, knowledge, and a solid anchoring in reality. By following the steps and surrounding yourself with reliable resources, everyone can experience this awakening safely and mindfully.

Mandalas and Yantras.
Mandalas or YANTRAS are geometric or other figures.
Theoretical and physical circles or chakras are mandalas with complex structures enclosing ideas and conceptual figures.
They are also based on color, shapes, and ideas.
The mandala, as a complex representation, contains notions and images of the inner or outer universe, and supports meditation.
It’s about recreating a sacred space, where symbolic circles are like enclosures allowing access to different worlds and psychological states.
Rites transpose the profane space into an ideal realm, on auspicious days, after purifications and preparations.

Mudras.
Tantric mudras are ritual gestures with erotic meanings.
They are also seals that direct or contain energy. Mudras allow one to achieve dance postures, body positions, ritual gestures, and attitudes (see Mahānirvana Tantra, Caradatilaka Tantra, Kamaratna Tantra).
The main finger mudras are: Mriga, Padma, Matsya, Samhāra, Dhyāna, and Yoni mudras.
Other mudras are performed with part or all of the body.
Mudra is also the name for the Sadhaka in left-hand tantra.
Bandhas and mudras or seals are used to promote the mastery of Pranayama and sexual energy (example Mulabandha and Mahâbandha).
Rituals and initiations: ceremonies aimed at purifying the practitioner and introduce it into deeper levels of practice.
Sexual Practices: In some schools, sexual rituals are used as a means of transcendence, although these practices are often symbolic and require appropriate guidance.
There are two main paths in Hindu Tantrism:
- Dakṣiṇācāra (Right Hand Path): Orthodox practices focused on meditation, devotion, and symbolic rituals.
- Vāmācāra (Left Hand Path): Unconventional practices that may include transgressive rituals to overcome dualities and social limitations.

Buddhist Tantra

In Buddhism, Tantra is primarily present in Vajrayana, also known as the "Diamond Vehicle." It incorporates esoteric practices aimed at achieving rapid enlightenment, notably through:
Visualization of Deities: The practitioner identifies with a deity to integrate its qualities
Use of mandalas: symbolic representations of the universe used as meditation aids.
Initiation rituals: specific transmissions allowing access to advanced practices.
Buddhist Tantra developed in India before spreading to Tibet, Mongolia, China, and Japan, where it influenced schools such as Shingon.

Kalachakra Tantra – Preface by the Dalai Lama

Kalachakra Tantra is a Buddhist meditation practice that belongs to the class of "Highest Yoga Tantra." Six generations after the king of Shambhala, the Buddha manifested in southern India and transmitted the Kalachakra Tantra at the request of King Suchanda.

Imprints of Tantrism in China and East Asia – Dir. Vincent Durand-Dastès

This collective volume aims, through its eight chapters, to contribute to delineating a tantric domain within the religious landscape of China and its neighbors. While esoteric Buddhism is at the heart of its subject, it also addresses practices and representations inspired by it while distinguishing themselves from it, whether they are related to Taoism, Shinto, or demonstrate a more diffuse presence within the popular culture of East Asia.
